When most artists hear the phrase Call of the Wild, they imagine mountains, forests, wildlife, and untamed landscapes.
Central Coast multimedia artist Sherry McGuire heard something else entirely... She heard a cougar.
McGuire, creator of Alchemyic Artisan, has been selected to participate in Call of the Wild, a juried exhibition presented by the Art Center Morro Bay. For her interpretation of the theme, she plans to exhibit The Midlife Mixologist... a dimensional mixed-media work celebrating a different kind of wildness: the untamed confidence that emerges when experience finally outranks permission.
“The wild isn’t always found in nature,” says McGuire. “Sometimes it appears in women who stop asking for approval and start ordering better wine.”
Part sculpture, part narrative, and part visual storytelling experience, The Midlife Mixologist combines layered relics, sculptural elements, original soliloquy, and hand-poured resin to explore reinvention, humor, resilience, and the freedom that often arrives later in life.
While many exhibition entries may focus on wildlife and natural landscapes, McGuire’s work explores the instinctive pull toward authenticity - the moment a woman finally answers her own call of the wild.
Known for creating immersive mixed-media works that blur the line between art, artifact, and storytelling, McGuire continues to expand Alchemyic Artisan throughout California wine country through exhibitions, hospitality installations, and artist residency collaborations.

“The Midlife Mixologist believes the secret ingredient is confidence. The second secret ingredient is bourbon... neat.”
